The problem
Commercial and industrial power users in the Middle East pay high grid tariffs and wrestle with reliability and carbon pressure, yet building their own solar plant demands capital, engineering teams and years of patience most businesses cannot spare.
How it works
Yellow Door Energy acts as a sustainable energy partner: it funds, engineers, builds and operates solar PV plants on client rooftops or nearby sites, then sells the electricity back to the host company under long-term solar leases or power purchase agreements. The customer gets cheaper, reliable clean power from day one; Yellow Door Energy owns the asset and the performance risk.
Pain points
Expensive daytime commercial tariffs, diesel backup costs, corporate emissions targets with no easy lever, and finance teams unwilling to tie up balance sheets in power infrastructure.
Business model
Infrastructure economics: raise equity (Actis as controlling shareholder alongside IFC, Mitsui and APICORP) plus project debt, deploy it into contracted solar assets, and harvest decades of PPA cash flows from industrial and commercial offtakers.
Challenges
Each market has its own net-metering rules, tariff trajectory and permitting maze; growth depends on continuous access to patient capital; and long-dated contracts concentrate counterparty and currency risk across the MEA region.
Funding
- Raised: $400 million equity raise substantially provided by Actis — now the controlling shareholder — with IFC, Mitsui and APICORP increasing commitments; initial investors exited via a share purchase (Oct 2022, Wamda).
- Earlier: $65 million Series A (2019) from IFC, Mitsui, Equinor Energy Ventures, APICORP and Adenium Energy Capital.
- Debt: AED 100 million ($27 million) financing from Emirates Development Bank for 60+ UAE plants (Nov 2024).
Latest — November 2024
On 13 November 2024 Emirates Development Bank announced a landmark AED 100 million financing agreement with Yellow Door Energy to develop and operate more than 60 solar PV plants across the UAE — expanding YDE’s leasing portfolio for major industrial players under tailored PPAs in support of the UAE’s net-zero goals.
