The problem
The Middle East is one of the world’s fastest-growing gaming markets, but global studios treat Arabic as an afterthought — literal translations, no cultural adaptation, no local payments. Hundreds of millions of players get games that don’t feel made for them, and developers leave MENA money on the table for lack of a publishing route in.
How it works
Founded in 2013 by Hussam Hammo, Tamatem takes international mobile games and rebuilds them for Arabic speakers — culturally relevant content, not just translation — then publishes with end-to-end distribution, monetisation, and localised payments. Its April 2026 acquisition of Istanbul-based Playable Factory (90,000+ playable ads, 30B+ impressions since 2018) brings interactive ad production in-house, and the company now runs an AI-first operating model across development, ad generation, and user experience.
Pain points
Underserved Arabic gamers, developers locked out of MENA distribution and payments, and publishers renting third-party ad-tech for every user-acquisition campaign.
Business model
Publishing revenue shares across a 300M-download portfolio, plus owned infrastructure: playable-ads ad-tech and localised payment solutions sold to developers globally, with offices in Amman, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Cairo, Istanbul, and Baghdad and expansion beyond MENA planned.
Challenges
Each publishing slate is hit-driven; the Saudi build-out, six offices (~180 staff), and a planned gaming academy spend ahead of revenue; and global publishers plus rising regional studios compete for the same players and developer partnerships — execution on the AI-first platform story has to justify the acquisition spree.
Funding
- Total: over $25M raised (Apr 2026), with Next Ventures and Square Enix joining as new investors and KRAFTON increasing its commitment.
- Series B: $11M (Dec 2021) led by KRAFTON — its first MENA investment — with Venture Souq, Endeavor Catalyst, and existing investors (Wamda, 500 Global); total then over $17M at a ~$80M valuation.
- Context: the Series B brought total raised since 2013 to over $17M (Wamda, Dec 2021), growing to over $25M by Apr 2026.
