Gulf countries face harsh heat, scarce water and almost no cultivable land, so the UAE imports nearly 90% of its fresh food — costing an estimated $14 billion in 2020. Long import cold chains mean less-fresh produce, and shocks like the Covid-19 pandemic showed how fragile that dependence is.
How it works
Pure Harvest builds and operates high-tech hybrid greenhouses engineered for desert conditions. Its teams control cooling, light, irrigation and growing recipes inside the glass, producing tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, strawberries and leafy greens steps from the cities that consume them. The company says it “buys what it can and builds what it must,” pairing imported greenhouse know-how with in-house Gulf-specific growing technology.
Pain points
No-addressable farmland in the desert, extreme cooling and water costs, seasonality gaps for local retailers, and consumers paying import prices for produce picked days earlier on another continent.
Business model
Capex-heavy controlled-environment agriculture: raise growth capital to build proprietary greenhouse assets, then sell premium fresh produce to grocers and distributors at prices that compete with imports while capturing the full farm-gate margin.
Challenges
Each new greenhouse is a large capital project that must hit yield and cost targets in brutal heat; expansion across the Gulf and Asia multiplies execution risk; and the business must keep proving it can beat cheap imports on price and consistency, not just freshness.

- Raised: $180.5 million convertible financing led by the Olayan family with Metric Capital Partners and IMM Investment (Jun 2022, AgFunderNews) — described as the largest convertible financing in the MEASA region.
- Total: $387 million raised to date after that round, following an earlier $64.5 million growth round led by IMM.
