The problem
Heart-failure and other chronic patients crash between checkups: a hospital discharge is followed by weeks of silence until the next emergency admission. Existing remote-monitoring tools compare vitals against population averages, generating alarm storms clinicians learn to ignore — data with no decisions attached.
How it works
Biofourmis ships a device- and sensor-agnostic platform: patients at home wear biosensors that stream continuous vitals into AI models using advanced FDA-approved analytics, per the company. The models learn each patient’s personal baseline, detect early signs of deterioration and trigger dynamic care pathways, with a licensed 24/7 virtual clinical team delivering the intervention. Offerings span Care@Home (acute and post-acute remote management), Biofourmis Care virtual specialty care for complex chronic conditions, and a digital clinical-trials solution with remote data capture and digital endpoints for drug developers.
Pain points
Fee-for-service care that monetizes beds rather than prevention, false-positive fatigue that trains nurses to mute monitoring dashboards, and point solutions that hand hospitals raw data without the clinicians to act on it.
Business model
Recurring enterprise contracts: health systems and payors pay for the virtual-care platform and clinical staffing that keeps patients out of hospital beds, while pharmaceutical clients pay for decentralized-trial tooling and co-developed digital therapies.
Challenges
The $300M round bought growth but not durability: a year later the company cut 120 jobs worldwide and founder-CEO Rajput stepped down, with COO Jaydev Thakkar fronting the trials-platform relaunch. Reimbursement for remote care remains patchy, and large device makers bundle monitoring with their own hardware.
Funding
- Raised: $300M Series D led by General Atlantic with CVS Health and existing investors (announced April 26, 2022), taking total funding to $445M; backers include SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Openspace Ventures, MassMutual Ventures, Sequoia Capital and EDBI.
- Extension: Intel Capital added US$20M to the Series D in a later 2022 extension.
- Valuation: $1.3B at Series D — unicorn status.
Latest — September 2023
Biofourmis debuted an expanded digital clinical-trials platform (remote data collection, digital endpoints, broader recruitment options) days after founder-CEO Kuldeep Singh Rajput resigned — a month after the 120-person layoff round — marking a pivot of emphasis from hospital-at-home growth toward pharma-facing trial infrastructure.
